The mission of this project is to propose a model for journalism that prioritizes care and a sense of responsibility toward others in the community

Mission

"Tool kit" is a group of resources, information and tools that help users understand a topic or subject area. It provides information presented in a variety of ways that helps users take action and execute on the subject area.

How to Use a Tool kit

As humans, most of us feel like we care a lot about social justice for others and making a change in the world for the better, but many of us have yet to ponder the difference between caring about something or someone and caring for something or someone. The concept of care has been explored in the world of academia, where researchers explain the transactional nature of caring about, whereas caring for requires a deeper interaction (Mihailidis, Noddings).

In simpler terms, when one cares about something, they feel something (i.e. feeling sad after seeing statistics of animal abuse) and doing nothing or contributing in a minor way (i.e. donating to a GoFundMe account). In the grand scheme of things, animal abuse will probably not improve solely on the sad feelings and twenty-dollar donation of someone who read about it. However, caring for is a much different, more impactful course of action. One who cares about something uses the emotion they feel in order to act. They want to make change for the big picture, not just for the “here and now.” However, it is important to note that caring can exist on a spectrum, not a complete dichotomy of either caring for or caring about. Where do you fall on the continuum?

Journalist Tool Kit

11 months after the tragedy The Guardian dedicated their front page to every victim of the fire. The project took them 9 months. They sent journalists all over the world, Cairo, Bangladesh, San Stino di Livenza and more to track down living relatives and friends who could tell us more about the people who had lost their lives. To me, this is a perfect example of journalism of care as they spent months establishing relationships with family members, creating that trust and rapport. They were respectful and followed the guidelines set by those who had lost loved ones, and they integrated themselves into their communities and homes, rather than extracting the basis needed for the story and then leaving.

In 2010, an earthquake devastated Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The death toll was approximately 300,000 and hundreds of thousands of people were displaced. In an effort to care for the devastated communities, credit card companies waived fees (millions of dollars) for charitable donations going directly to the people in need. The massive donation also helped Haiti to recover economically. This expression of care was helpful to the affected communities.
